He began his medical career at the Novosibirsk Medical Academy in Russia, graduating with an MD in 1989. He graduated cum laude in 1983 then headed east on the Massachusetts Turnpike to attend Boston University School of Medicine. He graduated from BUSM in 1988. Then he made the short trek west again for his internal medicine residency and GI fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

His first job out of fellowship in 1993 was on the teaching staff at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. His academic title was assistant clinical professor of medicine at Tufts University Medical School. While at Baystate he was named Teacher of the Year for the surgical residency program in 1994. He maintained a busy clinical practice while teaching PA students at Springfield College as part of his duties as a Baystate Medical Education and Research Foundation member.

In 2002, he was named Teacher of the Year for the UMass Medical residency program.

In 2021, Dr. Donahue joined Dr. Finkelberg at West Suburban GI to work part-time in their mutual hometown of Southborough. He remains on the faculty at UMass Medical School and is active staff at Marlborough Hospital.

Outside the medical practice, he is president of the Southborough Village Society, and enjoys light construction and renovation work. The new West Suburban GI office, housed in a nineteenth-century Victorian, has benefited from his varied skills and interests.
